       A big dandelion

And this tale is like this: every one always argues in it.
And more than others argue, certainly, the stubborn Elephant Calf and the funny Bear Cub.
That is what I want to tell you about.
       Well, listen.
I can not remember exactly, when it happened - maybe on Saturday, or maybe on Sunday - but, in short, it was a beautiful day.
And then it was a beautiful evening, and in that very beautiful evening the Bear Cub came to see the Elephant Calf.
-- Hello, - the Bear Cub smiled. - I have not seen you for a long time. Is it not a beautiful evening?
-- You think so? - the Elephant Calf said amazed. And added right there:
-- No, what makes a beautiful evening is that when it rains and you can tramp on puddles. Like this. - And so the Elephant Calf showed the way the puddles should be tramped on.
Of course, the Bear Cub enjoyed tramping on the puddles himself, but this time he disagreed.
The evening was beautiful, indeed. The stars sparkled like small distant candles, and moths touched down the Bear Cub's ears. They must have been thinking that there were simply hairy petals.
And that is why the Bear Cub could not have agreed to the Elephant Calf. He just smoothly took him on the trunk and dragged him out to the garden.
-- Look, can you not see that these stars and trees are wonderful? You, the stubborn Elephant Calf.
But the stubborn Elephant Calf said:
-- And generally speaking, my friend, I am very hardly surprised.
-- Hardly surprised? All right, then.
And the Bear Cub took his head in his paws, sat on a stump and started thinking of the ways to surprise the Elephant Calf.
And what if, per example, he blows a very-very big air-balloon and flies at the Elephant Calf's? Oh, well, it should be certainly all nice, but what if the Elephant Calf suddenly says: "This is not a beautiful air-balloon, but an ordinary thick bubble".
And what if he shows the Elephant Calf on one of the first lilies of the valley? But the Elephant Calf can easily say: "Oh, my friend, soon they are going to boost in thousands! Ha-ha-ha".
And the Bear Cub came almost to despair, when all of a sudden he remembered: but how could he possibly have forgotten?! The Elephant Calf is fond of clouds and dandelions...
Of the clouds because they are like big white elephants. And of the dandelions - they are like small clouds on green stems. The Elephant Calf often smells on them.
So then the Bear Cub went to the elephant's garden and said to a big poplar softly:
-- Please, bestrew me with whitey-white fluffy catkins. I want to make the Elephant Calf laugh and to surprise him.
-- If you please, - the poplar said.
It shook its branchs, and fluff started falling, and it kept falling, on and on. It looked like an entire sweet-scented snowfall had fallen on the Bear Cub. And soon he was covered so thickly, that the Bear Cub could not have been seen any more, even his small tail was disguised. The Bear Cub closed his eyes and went to sleep in that sweet-scented stack.
A rooster cried in the morning, the sun rose. And the Elephant Calf went out to the porch. He stretched himself, took a deep breath, looked around... and gasped with surprise: an unexampled big dandelion had grown up in the depth of the garden.
-- Can such dandelions really exist? - the Elephant Calf said in delight. - But it is marvellous!
The Elephant Calf even closed his eyes out of joy, and breathed the smell of the dandelion: Oh!
But when he opened his eyes again, the Bear Cub stood in front of him, and he had whitey-white fluff on his ears and on his small tail. The elephant turned out and was going to say something dull again. But the Bear Cub smiled:
-- Oh, please, do you not pretend! I heard you saying it was marvellous in my own ears!
-- Ok, ok,- the Elephant Calf nodded. - And actually, the Bear Cub, I often think of beautiful things, but I'm shy to speak about them.
       Well, this is it.
I hope you understood what I meant? Not all dull people are, in fact, dull. Maybe they are simply shy. And they need help. Even if it takes becoming a big dandelion for this.

       Turning into a beautiful tree

It was early spring. The flowers were not awaked yet. But the soil was already breathing, and sweet hazes drooped over it.
At moments the hazes even seemed to jingle.
But maybe it was not a seeming after all. Why, drip of thawing snow jingled for all day long.
And a small fawn, who was walking on the meadow, heard the drip jingling and thought: "Well, if the flowers grow when it thaws, can they grow on the crown of my head?"
But there were the hornlets that grew up, and not the flowers.
"Hornlets, hornlets. But what are they for?"
-- For butting, for butting, - suddenly a snail said, looking out of its shell. Then it bowed and showed how to butt.
Then the Small Fawn started scaring every one away. He scared the Fox Cub. The Fox Cub climbed into his burrow, and just one ear was left out.
He scared the Small Hare - the hare was so afraid that he jumped into a hole of a moldering aspen.
And then no one was seen anywhere. There was no one to butt with any more.
Suddenly someone showed up his hornlets from behind a mountain. That was the Moon who went for a walk in the sky.
The Fawn climbed the mountain and said:
-- My dear brother let us butt. Because no one wants to.
But the Moon slipped behind a black cloud. The Fawn became all angry. He even stamped his foot:
-- Well, who is to butt with me?
He stamped once, and twice. And the thunder woke up. A tight tambourine beat sounded. And then a red lightning came up. The horns glared. The Fawn was scared. Everything roared around. And tall trees in the dark looked like horned monsters, too.
The roughneck hid into a stack and spent all the night trembling there.
Morning came at last. The sun went out, the soil sighed, and the hazes wrapped it all round again.
The Fawn tried putting his hornlets up once more, but he remembered the other day doings and only bowed to every one:
-- Please forgive me, I shall never do it again.
-- With pleasure, - the Small Hare and the Fox Cub smiled. - But do behave. You were the reason why the sky went angry yesterday.
-- This is right, - the Fawn agreed. - I was frightened myself with the red horns.
The Fawn looked around, and he saw: small leaves appeared on the trees. Then the Fawn felt so sad.
-- There, - he said, - they must have received leaves because they did not butt.
He bent over a small puddle to look at himself. And even closed his eyes out of distress: his hornlets were so bare and ugly! Thus he was standing at the puddle with his eyes closed.
A round shoal of merry butterflies flied by.
-- Look, - one of them said, - but this is the kind Fawn. The one that said he was sorry today. And why is he so sad? Let us lower on his hornlets and find out.
Some whisper and rustle brought the Fawn to himself. He opened his eyes and saw: his hornlets were blooming! Living leaves of butterflies were shivering on the top of them! And the trees around seemed smiling to him. Because now he was the most beautiful of the trees.
If you please, turning into a beautiful tree is not very difficult a task. All it takes is being nice and not to butt.

When one is short of toys

One Donkey was made redundant from a circus. He became too old to work there any longer. But not to be bored, the Donkey decided to become a small donkey again. So he went to a toy-maker.
       And the toy-maker said:
-- I have only a long fluffy brush. But would it be all right for you?
-- Never mind, - the Donkey smiled, - the most important is that it makes fun.
He tied the brush to his own tail and started waghing it back and forth. Oh, he admired it!
The Hare saw him and was very surprised:
-- What is happening to you?
The Donkey was ashamed of his admiration of his own tail. This is why he answered:
-- I am... I am driving those clouds over there.
-- Oh, right, - the Hare said. - And I was just thinking why clouds fly, they cannot do it themselves, can they?
-- Of course they cannot, - the Donkey smiled and waghed his brush-of-tail again.
Well, he was waghing the brush-of-tail, having fun. But the Hare... He blabbed the news of the old Donkey's wonderful power all over the forest.
-- No, it can't be true, - the Lion said and went to check.
He did. It was the trueth! The Donkey lasingly stretched himself on a forest glade and waghed his fluffy brush. And heavy clouds gathered above him. The Lion sighed and even frowned. And every-everyone in the forest frowned, when they heard of it. From then on the Donkey only lifted his brush-of-tail - and all animals run hiding into bushes. When it happened first, the Donkey was simply astonished. But after a while he decided: "Oh well, I guess I can try circus again".
So the very next day all fences, all walls, all poles bore such bills: "The Grey Donkey - the Bravest Tamer!"
Then an unbeliveable wonder took place: other tamers came to the circus ring armed with guns, sabres, lances. And firemen with fire-hoses were obliged to stay around - just in case. But the Grey Donkey just stepped out - quiet music playing on background - he waghed his fluffy brush, and everyone obeid at once.
But one day a trouble happened. The Donkey met a baby chicken. He waghed his brush. But the chicken did not even start. The Donkey waghed the brush again - to nothing.
-- How dare you? - he shouted. - Why are you not afraid, do you not know that I have the most scary brush-of-tail?
-- No, - the baby chicken said, - you have to forgive me, as I hatched out only yesterday. But I think your brush-of-tail the most beautiful. It is so hot now, and it brings me the wind! Thank you.
-- You are welcome, - the Donkey said.
But, in fact, he was very upset. Why, if the redoubtable lions found out that a tiny baby chicken had no fear for his stern brush, they would tear him into pieces! And, probably, this would finally have happened.
Because the redoubtable lions came to the Wise Elephant for advice. You think of it, what was happening: they feared the Donkey, but the baby chicken did not! Maybe, the Donkey made a scheme, and he was not stern after all?
       But the clever Elephant said:
       - No, you angry lions, it's all right. One, who is genuinely strong, always has mercy for those little and weak.

       The Moon

Every one knows what the Moon looks like. It's green. Every one says that. And the only one green Young Frog says a slightly different thing:
       - The Moon... But he is kind. You must be joking you don't see it. The Moon shines during the night, and when the day comes, he goes to bed in mountains. His hornlets are sharp, so he is being careful not to give an occasional butt to the Sun. Do you see now?

       A little ant's ship

Once upon a time there was a little ant. He liked searching for something all days long. Once he found a dandelion flake, another time it was a maple leaf that looked like a goose foot... And he kept wandering, searching for something else...
But one day the Ant found a golden nutshell. In green grasses it was, shining like a small golden crown. The Ant was perplexed. What was it for? He turned it this way and another, but he was still unsure. Finally he decided: why not to go to his friend, a young frog, and ask him?
And in the forest the Young Frog was well-known for his jokes and wisdom. He looked at the nutshell, tried it on his head and said at once:
-- Well, it's too small for my crown. But maybe...
He put the nutshell into the river.
-- Croak-croak, yes, of course. Nothing else it is, but an ant's ship. Come seat inside and sail away. Remote countries and beautiful islands are glittering there for you.
-- But how am I to sail? - the Ant sighed quitely. - They say, every ship needs to have a sail?
-- Yes, it's truth, - the Young Frog nodded in agreement. - There are beautiful sails of silk and velvet.
-- But where I find them? - the Ant shaked his head doubtfully. - No silk, nor velvet grow in the forest.
-- And what about poppy petals? - the Young Frog smiled. - This is the best of velvets, as it is live.
The Ant climbed onboard the ship, and the Young Frog held him a sail of poppy petal. The wind blew, and the ship went off to remote countries. Still waves were splashing outside the board, and only blue water surrounded the ship. And suddenly... a beautiful island. It had a berth, and crowds of people welcomed the Ant. Someone blew trumpets, someone played drums, and someone just danced around.
"They must be welcoming a person, who came onboard a real vessel, with real sails", - the Ant thought.
       He went ashore and asked:
-- Who are you welcoming, eh?
-- But you, - some beatle answered.
-- Why? - the Ant was perplexed. - My ship is so small. And my sail is not genuine.
-- Your sail is wonderful, - the beatle sighed.
      -- Maybe, - the Ant said, - but I don't trust you.
-- Your sail is wonderful, - the beatle went on. - Your sail is live. It smells with forest, honey and the first silver dew.
-- It means I finally found what I was searching for, - the Ant said.
-- Certainly, - the beatle answered. - You found what your heart longed for.

       Motley giraffe

Have you ever had a chance to meet the Motley Giraffe? The giraffe that was afraid of light rain? He thought the light rain could wash off his colored spots. This giraffe had a friend. That of the Moon.
Once upon a time the Motley Giraffe asked his friend:
-- And what am I supposed to do, if it showers tomorrow?
-- You'll need an umbrella, - the clever Moon explained.
-- And where am I to get this "umbrella"? - The Giraffe asked curiously.
-- There, - the Moon pointed to a small fluffy cloud.
The next day the Giraffe went out with the cloud on a ribbon lead.
       That was the umbrella.
       Surprisingly, it showered even more.
Certainly, if it was not our Giraffe, he would probably have said:
-- What a funny umbrella, it lets shower through!
But it was the Motley Giraffe. And he said completely other thing:
-- What a funny shower - it showers through my umbrella!
